Shulk is the protagonist of the critically-acclaimed role-playing game Xenoblade Chronicles.

Background[]

The story of Xenoblade Chronicles takes place in an endless sea where the bodies of two titans lie dormant. Those two titans used to be in an endless fight with each others. Their names were Bionis and Mechonis. Shulk's story begins at the lowest known point of the Bionis, Colony 9. The Colony was formed by the Homs, which is the name that humans were given in this Universe. Shulk used be a nerdy boy who liked to make weapons for the Defence Force, until one day, the Mechon attacked Colony 9 and killed his childhood friend Fiora. Shulk then swore revenge to the Faced Mechon who killed Fiora and started his campaign to destroy all Mechon with the help of the Monado, a sword that allows him to predict the future.

Along the way, Shulk realized that the Mechon were using humans. He found out that Fiora was being used as a weapon and he tried to pursue her. At Galahad Fortress, he met Egil, the leader of Mechonis, and managed to save Fiora. Shulk and his party scaled through the body of the Mechonis to kill Egil and save the people of the Bionis, but just when he was about to end the battle, his friend Dickson killed him to awaken the powers of Zanza, who was using Shulk as a vessel.

Shulk was revived later and he ended up fighting against Zanza, the creator of his world. He managed to destroy him by unlocking the true power of his Monado. After killing Zanza, Shulk used his newfound power to recreate the world, but without the need for gods.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Visions: Shulk's main ability which allows him to see into the future which was bestowed upon him by The Monado. When this happens Shulk's eyes glow blue and his perception slows to a halt when having a vision with him describing the experience as "as if time had stopped". Originally Shulk had no control over these visions with them appearing to him nigh randomly about futures he needs to change or to give him information on future events. Later however, Shulk developed his own visions without the need of The Monado and with them he became able to have complete control over what he wants to see along with the previous benefit of having a vision without having to trigger it himself with some scenarios including Shulk just being aware of what's to happen without the use of a vision.
  • Techniques:
    • Arts: Arts are techniques performed by characters which can have effects attached to them, arts can do various effects such a healing, dealing additional damage or inflicting a status effect onto a foe.
    • Slit Edge: Shulk stabs the enemy with the Monado, allowing him to decrease their defence should it hit their sides.
    • Back Slash: Shulk slashes the enemy with the Monado, dealing massive amounts of damage should it hit their backs.
    • Light Heal: Shulk restores his or his friend's health.
    • Shaker Edge Shulk winds his Monado for a massive hit, allowing him to stun enemies should they be toppled prior to the hit landing.
    • Air Slash: Shulk jumps in the air to deal an upper slash onto the target to inflict break, which can slow down their movement should he hit them in the side.
    • Shadow Eye: Shulk makes himself less noticeable to his foes, and buffs his next Arts in the process.
    • Battle Soul: Sacrifices half of Shulk's Health to deal Chain Attacks with his friends.
    • Stream Edge Shulk backsteps and swings the Monado to deal an AOE attack, inflicting Break upon anyone caught in the attack.

Equipment[]

  • The Monado: The divine sword of The Bionis, The Monado is a blade of many mysteries. The Monado bends to the will of it's user allowing it to change form at will or harness new powers. The Monado does this by having control the ether around it in order to perform certain abilities. The Monado I has had it's true capabilities sealed and as a result it cannot harm those with the blood of Zanza (Homs, High Entia, Nopon) as any attempt to do so will just result in The Monado bouncing off the target. If anyone not chosen by The Monado attempts to wield The Monado, they will be inflicted with numerous harmful effects which can lead to death, paralysis and more.
    • Monado Arts: Monado Arts are special arts that are used by The Monado and it's replicas. Their main use is to allow for Shulk to change the future as these abilities came to Shulk in response to his desire to change an undesirable future.
      • Monado Buster: Shulk extends the laser blade of the Monado multiple times its normal size, allowing to hit far more enemies than normal, and is extremely effective against the Machina and Mechons.
      • Monado Enchant: Shulk strengthens the weapons of himself and his friends to the point that enemies that are resistant to specific weapons like the mechon can be harmed normally.
      • Monado Shield: Shulk generates a barrier that protects himself from any incoming attacks with a swing of his sword.
      • Monado Speed: Shulk gives himself or any other target a greater chance to dodge physical attacks via enhancing their speed by 40%.
      • Monado Purge: Shulk shoots out a massive projectile that covers a wide area that's capable of paralyzing it's victim, rendering their abilities nulled, and can prevent damage being sent back to him upon impact.
      • Monado Armour: Shulk grants himself a massive buff in defence against any physical and ether based attacks.
      • Monado Cyclone: Shulk swings his blade upward, causing a massive torrent of wind that attacks everything around him, rendering those who's hit by the ability to fall and lose their bearing should they be inflicted with Break.
      • Monado Eater: Shulk stabs in the direction towards the enemies, releasing a wave of ether energy that removes any buffs the enemy has given themselves.
  • Ether Gems: Refined gems made from crystals that form around The Bionis, these gems grant the user numerous abilities when equipped. A list of the gems and their effects can be found here.
  • Armour: Armour is protective gear worn by Shulk to increase his capabilities in battle. Coming in the form of head, torso, arms, legs and feet these pieces of armour have 3 main types which include light armour, medium armour and heavy armour.
    • Light Armour:
      • Head Piece:

  • Replica Monado Having his Monado stolen by Zanza, Shulk was gifted a replica which was made using machina technology. While being weaker than The Monado II the Replica Monado as it's name implies replicates everything that Shulk's Monado could do which allows for him to still perform his Monado Arts despite not having access to his Monado anymore.
    • Monado Agni: A variation of the Replica Monado, it is made of hard materials which allow it to have increase defensive capabilities.
    • Monado Dogma: A variation of the Replica Monado, it is made of thinner materials which allow it to hit critical hits more often.
    • Monado Rudra: A variation of the Replica Monado, it is made of lightweight materials which makes it easy to use.
    • Monado Abyss: A variation of the Replica Monado, it is made of strong materials which greatly increase it's attack power.
    • Monado Saga: A variation of the Replica Monado, it is made of thick materials which greatly increase it's defensive capabilities.
  • The Monado III: Also known as The True Monado, this Monado was is the Monado itself which Shulk obtained in his fight with Zanza. Unlike the other Monados, The Monado III is a transparent sword that has the form of a weaving fishbone pattern that branches downward, ending in a large triangular tip. A large hourglass-shaped guard now separates the Monado's ring from its hilt. The pommel of the sword is a small arrowhead design.
  • Replica Monado EX: Also known as Monado Rex, this Monado is an enhanced version of Shulk's previous Replica Monado. It bears a similar design to that of The Monado I and is used by Shulk during the events of Future Connected.
