Ridley (AKA Geoform: 187) is a savage Space Dragon from the Metroid franchise and is one of the leaders of the Space Pirates.

Background[]

Cosmic Year 2000. The Galactic Federation maintains relative peace in the galaxy, bringing it into a relative age of prosperity. But where there is prosperity, there are those willing to exploit it by immoral means. The Milky Way galaxy would soon tremble in fear at the space pirates led by their infamous leader, Ridley.

It is a common misconception that Ridley is part of a species named “Space Dragon”. However that is actually non-canon. Ridley’s species’ name is entirely unknown. Similarly unknown is most of Ridley’s past. What is known is that through cunning and power, he made his way into High Command, the leading body of the Space Pirates, and launched a fateful raid on the Earth colony K-2L.

In the short term, this raid was highly successful, leading to the destruction of the entire colony. However, in the long term, this was the fateful raid that gave birth to Samus Aran, the Galactic Bounty Hunter and Ridley’s sworn nemesis. The two would engage in battle many times over the years, getting stronger to better oppose one another.

Ridley would lead the space pirates to actual successes against the Federation, even with the Super-Bounty Hunter Samus opposing them every step of the way.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Plasma Breath: Plasma is a gaseous state of matter that is extremely hot. Ridley has plasma breath that launches from his mouth. He can charge for greater range and damage, and the plasma blasts can even travel along the surface of the floor.
    • Fire Breath: Ridley can also produce fire from his mouth in the form of bursts or as a firespray. He can create up to five separate fire bursts from his mouth at once, propelling them at seemingly any angle.
  • Wing-based Flight: Ridley can fly, maneuver, and attack at high speed, even in space.
  • Prehensile Tail: Ridley's tail essentially functions as an extra appendage. He has complete control over it, using it primarily to stab his enemies. He can use it while flying, and even wrap it around someone's neck.
  • Claws and Jaws: Ridley is able to perform many powerful attacks with his claws; many of his melee attacks can be enhanced with electrical energy. And, of course, he isn’t above just taking a giant bite out of his opponent.
  • Healing by Eating: In the Zero Mission prequel manga, it is stated that Ridley can regenerate from serious injuries faster if he consumes human flesh. He can regenerate massive body losses this way, though it is implied to take a while and is generally impractical in combat. He is able to regenerate from being burnt down to the bone.
  • Camouflage: If Ridley’s horrific appearance and abilities weren’t terrifying enough, he also possesses the ability to camouflage himself, allowing him to ambush his foes.

Alternate Forms[]

Meta Ridley[]

After being killed by Samus on Zebes during Metroid(: Zero Mission), the Space Pirates recovered his remains and preformed cybernetic reconstruction of geoform 187. Ridley was revived into Meta Ridley, complete with durable armorskin, energy wings, and a plasma fuel cell. This became Ridley primary form durning the Metroid Prime series.

  • Kinetic Breath Weapon:
  • Multi-Missile System:
  • Ultrathermal Flamestrike Projector:
  • Meson Bomb Launcher:

Omega Ridley[]

After being killed again on Tallon IV, Meta Ridley's dead body was recovered and revived due to exposure of Phazon.

Proteus Ridley[]

Feats[]

Strength[]

  • Can easily harm and restrain Samus
    • Sent Samus skidding across the floor with one of his attacks
  • Can drop down in conjunction with his "flamestrike projector" to emit a shockwave of flames, destroying a totem in the process
  • One blow from his claws can destroy the remains of a stone totem
  • Can break out of his restraints and medical equipment with minimal effort
  • Tail is strong enough to pierce the Chozo and his power armor
  • Can impale his tail into the ground so hard that causes spikes to move forward along the earth
  • Plasma Breath is powerful enough to split the ground
  • Tore apart a hill with his Plasma beam (5.74 gigatons of TNT)

Speed[]

  • Is able to outpace spacecrafts
  • Can dodge missiles and lasers
  • Can fly into space in seconds
  • Is able to keep up with Samus, who can catch a point black bullet (Mach 17.77 - Mach 21.15)
  • Is fast enough to bombard and slam a Chozo warrior to the ground, leaving afterimages
  • Can outmaneuver Samus' gunship and escape her tracking system, which can travel to another galaxy in six months (10 million c)

Durability[]

  • Smashed through a stone ceiling.
  • Can tank hits from Samus and is unfazed by most of her weapons
  • Can survive a one-shot of a Flamethrower
  • Can take several shots of Samus's Power Beam before smashing her against a platform
    • Samus' Power Beam is strong enough to activate an underwater volcano

  • Bested Samus twice
  • Responsible for the massacre of the colony K-2L
  • Managed to cheat death god knows how many times
  • Eventually got into Super Smash Bros.

Faults[]

  • For as vicious and badass as Ridley might be, his actual track record against Samus is...well let’s just say it isn’t the greatest, with the majority of their battles ending with him getting his tail handed to him and needing cybernetics to keep going.
  • While Ridley is said to be intelligent and cunning, he’s often portrayed a simple-minded savage beast. Makes you wonder if he got mistaken for Nintendo's other fire-breathing big bad.
  • Also, if someone shoots Ridley's mouth while he charges his Plasma Breath, it will explode in his mouth and damage himself.
