Victor Von Doom is one of Marvel's most popular villains. He made his debut in "Fantastic Four #5".
Background[]
Victor Von Doom was born decades ago to a tribe of Latverian Romani people under the rule of an unnamed nobleman. Victor's mother was the witch Cynthia Von Doom who died by Mephisto's hand while von Doom was young. His father, Werner, was the leader of the tribe and a renowned medicine man who kept his wife's sorceress life quiet in order to protect Victor from a similar fate. Once in the United States, Victor met fellow student and future nemesis Reed Richards, who was intended to be his roommate, but Doom disliked him and asked for another roommate. After a time, Victor constructed a machine intended to communicate with the dead. Though Richards tried to warn him about a flaw in the machine, seeing his calculations were a few decimals off, Victor continued on with disastrous results. The machine violently failed and the resulting explosion seemingly severely damaged his face.
Expelled after the accident, Victor traveled the world until he collapsed on a Tibetan mountainside. Rescued by a clan of monks, Victor quickly mastered the monks' disciplines as well as the monks themselves. Victor then forged himself a suit of armor, complete with a scowling mask, and took the name Doctor Doom. As Doctor Doom, he would go on to menace those he felt responsible for his accident—primarily, Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four. He succeeded in taking over Latveria, taking an interest in the welfare of the Roma. Ever since his first appearance he's been one of the biggest antagonists of the Marvel Universe and its heroes, with his biggest enemies being the Fantastic Four.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Magic: Doctor Doom was introduced to the mystic arts by his mother (who was of Romani and Latverian blood). He further developed his abilities by traveling through time and learning lost Dark Arts from individuals such as Morgan Le Fey. After Dr. Strange stepped down as the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, Doom was amongst the candidates considered suitable to replace him. However the majority of his powers came from the Hazareth Three, and upon angering them most of his sorcery was removed and he was trapped in Hell as punishment. While they enhanced his powers he could achieve the following:
- Mystical Energy Manipulation: Doom can utilize his magic for offencive projectile blasts and defencive forcefield barriers.
- Invoke Entities
- Spell Casting
- Spirit Reversal: A spell that crippled The Sentry, but only due to his unstable mental state.
- Summoning: Doom can summon a variety of demons and monsters, calling upon entire hordes of demonic abominations to fight against his opponents, some of which are strong enough on their own to match the likes of the Thing.
- Banishment: Doom's magic can banish anyone if he feels like it and can banish them through time, like how he was able to easily banish Morgan le Fay back in time, stranding her in 1,000,000 B.C.
- Teleportation: Doom's mystic abilities allow him to teleport, and he can even interfere with the teleportation spells of others, controlling and changing their destinations so they will arrive wherever he pleases, even on a far-off planet.
- Dimensional Travel: Doom could travel to other dimensions, including accessing the dreamtime.
- Dreamtime: Thanks to his research, Doom can access the Australian Aboriginal Dreamtime to communicate with others through their dreams.
- Mystical Ensnaring
- Mystical Portals
- Healing: Doom can use his mystic abilities to heal himself and others, such as to repair his broken neck or damaged arm.
- Time-Travel
- Power Absorption
- Anti-Physics: During his demonic power-up, Doom's presence alone was enough to slowly repeal the laws of physics around him, weakening their influence.
- Dr Strange spells:
- Crimson Bands of Cytorrak: A spell that draws power from the god Cytorrak to create several red energy rings to bind an opponent.
- Bolts of Balthakk: A spell to conjure or summon some type of offensive electrical discharges.
- Crystals of Cyndriarr: A spell that call and project mystical crystals that cause death upon contact.
- Flames of the Faltine:
- Illusions/Images of Ikonn:
- Elemental Manipulation: Doom could create a blizzard within seconds.
- Telekinesis: After being sent to the dawn of time by Marquis of death, Victor claimed that he spent a millennium transforming his body and mind, mastering long lost dark arts. This resulted in him to being able to use notable telekinesis as well as levitate himself.
- Power Nullification: Doom has repeatedly blocked the Fantastic Four's powers via sorcery.
- Psionics: Throughout his history, Doom has mastered some minor psychic abilities. Those skills originate from his encounter with aliens and mutants, naming the Ovoids and the Marquis of Death. Doom once claimed that he had evolved as a being, though it is not clarified how or to what extent and in later issues this seems to have been ignored by writers. The following powers however are usually considered to be a part of Doom's skillset. Finally, those skills are the result of personal mental development and are not to be confused with magic.
- Hypnotism: Doom has the power to hypnotize others through eye contact, dominating their minds with his overwhelming willpower.
- Technopathy: Doom can exert technopathic control over certain machines, most notably the Doombots, but can control other technologies too, as he did with his suit's charger, describing his ability as latent telepathy.
- Ovoid Mind Transfer: A mental power that Doom learned from the alien Ovoids. By making eye contact with another being, he can transfer his consciousness into their body, switching places their original consciousness, and leaving them in his old body. As he prefers his own body to that of any other, he dislikes doing this, but will do it if necessary, and can even use it multiple times in quick succession while fighting.
- Super-Genius Intelligence: Doctor Doom's most dangerous weapon is his intellect. He is one of the top mortal minds on the planet. Doom even cured Ben Grimm of his Thing form. Doom has constructed hundreds of devices, including a working time machine, devices which can imbue people with powers, and many types of robots. His most frequently used robots are his "Doombots," exact mechanical replicas of the himself. They look like him, talk like him, and even act like him. Individually, Doombots have an advanced AI (artificial intelligence) so that each one believes itself to be the real Doom. As a safety measure, each Doombot has a dampener program that is triggered whenever the real Doom (or another Doombot) is nearby. These "body doubles" appear when Doom cannot be present or is unwilling to risk his own life, and are often responsible for Doom's seeming return from certain death. Another common type of robot used is the Servo-Guard, the police force of Latveria. Doom specializes in physics, robotics, cybernetics, genetics, weapons technology, biochemistry, and time travel. He also has natural talents for leadership, strategy, politics, and manipulation.
- Master Martial Artist: During his time in Tibet, Doom was presumably trained in martial arts by the monks. He is vastly skilled in many combat techniques, both armed and unarmed. He has been trained by the best sword masters on Earth and can achieve very powerful nerve strikes. His combat skills are so great that he managed to kill a lion with his bare hands, to be indistinguishable to Daredevil while in his suit, and to wield Captain America's shield as skillfully as Steve Rogers himself. He was also able to defeat Black Panther in close combat even when his suit was depowered and incapacitate Taskmaster on pure hand to hand, without the aid of technology or magic.
- Peak Human Conditioning: Doom has trained his body to the level of the finest human athlete. He is well-built, fast and agile. He has also displayed great reflexes and equilibrium. Victor once claimed that he was training and building himself physically for years, so as to be ready to face the demonic beings called from Mephisto during their annual confrontation. His physical strength and durability match even those of Daredevil.
- Indomitable Will: Doom has phenomenal determination, fearlessness and strength of will. Indeed, he has the strongest will on Earth. Hence, he was able to resist psychic attacks from Emma Frost and the Purple Man using only his will, to reject the mystical armor that the Soulsword provides the wielder on sheer willpower alone and while he was tortured in Hell, he refused to let a single audible indication of pain exit his mouth. Doom's willpower could be considered even godly as, after having stolen the Beyonders' omnipotent abilities for himself, he was capable of creating an entire new planet from the remnants of incursion points between collapsing worlds, that new planet was Battleworld. He held this world together with his will.
- Highly Influential Connections: As Monarch of Latveria, Doctor Doom has access to technological and military hardware. He also has command of conventional military forces; see Doctor Doom's Generals.
- Charismatic Leader: Doom is able to attract people's positive attraction, especially on the citizens of Latveria, even when his plans are failing. He is also a skilled politician and strategist and has occasionally been the leader of numerous teams, including the Cabal and the Fantastic Four.
- Diplomatic Immunity: (formerly) As the leader of a sovereign nation, Doctor Doom often visits the United States or the United Nations for political reasons. He enjoys diplomatic immunity during these trips, and his embassy is considered foreign soil. He has even been escorted by Captain America himself. After renouncing his status as ruler of Latveria, it is likely he lost this status.
- Artist: Doom has shown himself to be a talented artist. He painted a duplicate of the Mona Lisa while using Layla Miller as his model.
- Pianist: Doom has shown himself to be a talented pianist. He has played various compositions of his own creation.
- Master Swordsman: Doom has been shown being proficient in sword combat, having been trained by the best teachers - until he overcame them all - and being able to out-duel Warlord Krang in swordsmanship.
- Weapon Systems & Vehicles Proficiency: Victor is highly proficient in the use of weapons, mostly those of his own creation, such as battle suits, ray weapons and bombs, but he also utilises rifles, guns and grenades with great aiming ability. He has also been shown as a capable driver of vehicles such as the Excavator, the Gyroscopic Aircraft, the Doom Cycle and the Doom Copter.
- Multilingual: Except English, he speaks all languages spoken in Latveria, those being Latverian, German, Hungarian and Romany and possibly several others.
Equipment[]
Doom's Armor[]
Forged at a Tibetian monastery with the aid of monks, Dr. Doom's mystical armor combines and utilizes adaptive tecnology, and has been modified over the years in both science and sorcery. Composed of high-strength titanium alloy, powered by compact nuclear generators, and covered by a absorbent ballistic fabric, Doom's armor goes beyond the wonder of both magic and technology, and into the obsured.
- Enhanced Strength: The armor gives Dr. Doom the ability to lift (press) several tons. He has held his own against Spider-Man, Thor, and even The Hulk in hand to hand combat. The armor also grants him such strength he can pulverize a diamond with no effort.
- Enhanced Durability: The armor has been shown durable enough to take a blast from the Infinity Gauntlet to point-black range, with little to no harm. The armor managed to withstand a massive explosion of energy at ground zero , from the Marquis of Death - which destroyed the entire capital of Latvia and the rest of the country.
- Electric Shock: The outer surface of the armor can generate a massive electric shock on command.
- Electrical Field: Also known as Electrical Force Field, the Electro-Magnetic Amplifier and Neural Disruptor, this mechanism allows Doom to generate a point-blank electric shock causing enormous damage to anyone daring enough to touch Doom - for example, someone in melee with him. It also affects, to a lesser extent, nearby people not in direct contact with Doom's armor. Anyone affected is susceptible to falling unconscious. Doom used this device to kill his clone and also to knock down Elvin Haliday and even Colossus, who had resisted previous attacks. It was however not enough to stun The Thing in the later's mutated, "spiky" state.
- Electrified Fist: Whenever Doom engages in melee combat, he can electrify his gauntlet to cause additional damage.
- Finger-Blaster: Also known as Miniature Finger-Gun, Doom's early armor had a weapon in the tip of the index finger in his gauntlet. This was not a powerful energy shot: Spider-man protected himself against it with an ad-hoc web shield. Spider-man later clogged the gun with his web.
- Magnetic Polarity Controllers: Besides manipulating metal, this device allows Doom to redirect Magneto's power against him.
- Teleportation Device: Doom's armor is able to teleport him across a short-range of distances
- Link to Doom's Time-Platform: An invention Doom can use to travel through time
- Flight: Doom's armor has several methods of self-propelled flight.
- Jet-Packs: The typical suit of armor has twin jet-packs mounted at the waist, though other suits (or modifications of the original suit) contain a single jet-pack mounted on the back.
- Jet Boots: The armor has built-in jet boots to hover and/or fly.
- Concussive Blasts: Concussive bolts of force can be fired from the gauntlets and faceplate of the armor, though the mask only generates force blasts when it is not being worn.
- Atomic Powered Blaster: A different bolt that can be shot from the fingertip of his right gauntlet.
- Force-Field: The suit's best defense is the force-field generated by the armor, which has a maximum radius of eight feet (and so can encompass others); Doom cannot attack without lowering his force-field.
- Infrared Vision: Infrared scanners in the helmet allow the wearer to detect heat sources, permitting night vision and the ability to see invisible persons (unless they do not give off or can somehow mask their heat signature).
- Recycling System: The armor is self-supporting, equipped with internal stores and recycling systems for air, food, water, and energy, allowing the wearer to survive lengthy periods of exposure underwater or in outer space.
- Sensor Systems: Optical scanners in the helmet allow the helmet's eyepieces to be used as high-powered telescopes, and parabolic ear amplifiers fitted inside the helmet allow Doom to detect extremely faint sounds and unusual frequencies within the audible range for humans.
- Vacuum Resistance: Doom's armor allows him to survive in space, underwater or at toxic environments.
- Thermal Units: This device hidden on Doom's gloves allowed him to spray a cloud of yellow mist with special properties to nullify invisibility powers of a character in an area. Once this enemy was located, Doom could easily change to a different attack.
- Thermo-Energizer: A solar energy absorber within Doom's armor that gathers and controls solar and heat energy to power the armor in case its batteries were discharged or Doom wanted to perform an extraordinary feat. It requires his force-fields to be deactivated in order to be used.
- Personal Adapters: Using this device Doom can absorb multiple forms of energy.
- Cosmic Power Siphon: A device that Doom built that allows him to absorb the power of others. Originally a clunky harness, it has decreased in size over the years, eventually becoming a part of Doom's armor. It allows him to near-instantly drain the power of even cosmic beings such as Terrax, Silver Surfer, Watchers such as Uatu, Galactus, and even The Beyonder.
- Special Protection Against Other Machines: Doom's armor is impervious to some of his other devices, such as the Disintegrator. His suit was also unhackable by the Extremis
- Splinters of the True Cross: Doom claims that his armour contains splinters of the True Cross, along with other such defenses (presumably to protect him from undead enemies, i.e Dracula). Considering Doom's capabilities to time travel, there is a possibility of this being true.
- Molecular Expander: Doom carries a Molecular Expander with him that he can use to expand pebbles and even atomic particles to the size of boulders.
- Ectoplasmic Ionizer: Built into Doom's armor, this allows him to dispel the spirits of the dead, sending them to the afterlife.
- Time Cube: Doom has a Time Cube incorporated into his armor, which he can use to manipulate time, reversing it to reconstruct his destroyed castle.
- Miniature Flying Spy Camera: A flying camera no bigger than a pea that is controlled by Doom. It can be used to stealthy see and hear enemy territory for Doom to gain valuable information.
- Unknown Booby Traps & Point-Singularity Power Supply: Even with Doom captured and his armor's power drained, heroes like the Avengers may fear the many booby traps awaiting any who dare attempt to remove the armor from Doom, despite the likes of Thor and She-Hulk being in the team and thus implying either a reaction at their level of power or some form of hax. The zone of his ankle also houses a secret button that can restore the power of his armor.
- Video-Communicator: A small audio-visual broadcaster hidden in the right gauntlet's plate.
- Optional Systems: The following devices could be added to Doom's armor at his whim, but Doom himself only carried them if he felt he would need those:
- Energy Fist: Doom developed this tiny device that could be hidden within any of the gauntlets in his armor. It could generate an enormous hand made of energy that Doom could use to hold or punch an enemy with great strength. Doom's real hand did not need to replicate the movements of the energy fist.
- Fingertip Darts: Doom developed and included these small darts to be shots from the tips of the fingers (not thumbs) of his armor's gauntlets. Each dart was a short-range projectile filled with poison. The victim, if hit, could withstand the ill effects through sheer endurance. While Doom only seldom included this in his armor, news of this weapon reached other people's ears even in the United States of America.
- Image Projector: This device was developed by Doom and could be optionally incorporated within his armor, specifically within a hinge-hidden compartment. Whenever Doom activates this device, a realistic, three-dimensional projection of himself appears in the nearby area. Doom can use the image as a decoy, but he also use it for recon purposes -he can see, hear and speak through the image, and he can even use his armor's powers through the image. The image was not as powerful or endurant as the real Doom, and it vanished if it suffered enough damage, if Doom moved beyond the valid range, or if Doom simply switched off the device. Whenever Doom is not using this device, he keeps it in his laboraty at Castle Doom.
- Inhibitor Ray: Doom developed this device which prevented other people from attacking him directly. Specifically, the Ray broadcasted an invisible area in Doom's immediate vicinity that psychically affected anyone trying to attack Doom at point-blank range. Even the strong-willed Thing failed to attack Doom directly although theoretically some people would be able to overcome the device's effect. The effect lasted up to ten hours but it required some time to affect a subject. During this time, the subject was to be distracted. The Inhibitor Ray, while amazingly advanced and discreet enough to be hidden in Doom's Armor -indeed its appearance is unknown- was nonetheless fragile if directly attacked, and was useless against non-organic enemies such as robots.
- Instant Hypnotism Impulser: A small device that can be incorporated in the left gauntlet of Doom's Armor, it disrupts the sense of balance of an organic victim at close range by means of a high-frequency pulse homing in on that person's ear. Doom is immune to the effect. Robots and androids are also immune to this item, but pilots of mechanic devices are not. Besides, Doom is required to manually open a hatch on his gauntlet before using it. Doctor Doom used it once successfully against The Thing. Since then, he keeps a unit of the impulser at hand (no pun intended) and, if required, his technicians can attach it to his gauntlet in a few minutes.
- Intensified Molecule Projector: Doom developed this technology that can be hidden within a gauntlet of his armor. Doom can optionally include it in any of the gauntlet whenever he feels he will use it, but it is not included in the default configuration of the armor. The Projector takes synthetic molecules and throws them to a target. As soon as the intensified molecules enter in contact with oxygen, they start growing to the size of a huge stone, becoming a deadly projectile - and at the same time, one that his quite light to carry. Doom built only one unit of the Projector, which included a supply of molecules. Doom used this weapon to attack alchemist Diablo, who was offering an alliance. Diablo easily countered Doom's attack with a chemical compound that transformed the bounder-sized molecules into harmless feathers.
- Ionic Blade: Doom developed this edged weapon that looked like a knife with its blade covered with energy. Doom could use it to cut objects or to fire a short-range bolt of ionic energy. The ionic blade could be hidden in the right gauntlet of Doom's Armor. Unfortunately it had limited power and became useless after not many uses. Doom decided to build several units of this item, keeping one at each of his several castles.
- Knuckle Rockets: Doom developed these projectiles to snuff out fire-based superpowered enemies such as the Human Torch. The rockets were filled in with special chemicals to extinguish even artificial blazes, temporarily preventing the Torch from using his powers. The projectiles were trackers, so that Doom did not even have to aim at the enemy. They were shot from hidden compartments in the knuckles of Doom's gauntlets. Doctor Doom used these items once to defeat the Torch without harming him so that he could negotiate with the Fantastic Four.
- Mini-Missile Launcher: Doom developed this short-barreled weapon that could be attached to any of the gauntlets of his armor or to his Doombots. The device was hidden until Doom used it. It shot a short-range, heart-seeking missile that self-destructed if it overcame its range. If it collided with a wall, the mini-missile had a powerful black blast. The clip held up to three mini-missiles.
- Nerve Impulse Scrambler
- Neuro-Space Field
- Sleeping Gas
- Refrigeration Unit: A device that can be added to any gauntlet in Doom's Armor, it can freeze anything it touches into a block of ice. Doom used it once to benumb Mr. Fantastic, who was trying to grapple him; then used it on a rope which he intended to use to lasso the Human Torch. However, the Thing prevented this plan, and then the Torch unfroze Mr. Fantastic. Doom since kept two of these in his laboratory at Castle Doom, for occasional use.
- Sonic Drill: This device was developed by Doom and could be optionally incorporated within his armor, its single operative unit being kept at Castle Doom's labs the rest of the time. The device sent a bolt of energy that could bore through ground of stone or mud makign absolutely no sound. It could create a tunnel of up to three meters of diameter, slowly creating the tunnel. It could also be reconfigured as a weapon to attack nearby enemies, but the process required manual resetting.
- Stun-Shocker: This device was developed by Doom and could be optionally incorporated within his armor, its single operative unit being kept at Castle Doom's labs the rest of the time. When activated, the device radiated energy to stun all the indviiduals in the immediate surroundings to unconsciousness without permanently harming them.
- Nerve-Scrambling Ray-Gun: Using this weapon, Doom can scramble his opponents' nerve impulses to prevent them from properly controlling their body or coordinating their movements.
- Actuality Shield: A personal shield that can transform the unreal into real things, allowing it to counteract Nightmare's powers and reduce him to a physical being.
- Idento-Disc: These tissue-thin plastic discs allow Doctor Doom to track what ever they are attached to.
- Holographic Image Projector: Doctor Doom developed device that allows him to project holographic images of himself, complete with sound.
On-hand Gadgets[]
- Doombots: Doom is well-known for his legions of Doombots, robotic doppelgangers created to fool others into thinking that they have defeated him or to act in his stead. Each Doombot's mind is near completely identical to Doom's, preventing telepaths from telling the difference. His most powerful Doombots are outfitted with replications of the Power Cosmic, making them equal to the likes of the Silver Surfer.
- Antimatter Extrapolator:
- Metabolic Transmuter:
- Time Shift Bomb: A bomb that throws those affected 2 seconds back in time, distorting their perception and allowing Doom to easily avoid their lagging movements.
- Vibration Bomb: A bomb that erases the loyalties and personalities of all those caught in the blast and replaces it with complete and utter loyalty to Doom, making his thoughts their only thoughts, and his will their own will.
- Magnetic Grabber: The Magnetic Grabber or just Grabber was a small magnetic cylinder designed by Doom that could be maneuvered via remote control. Once attached to an object, it could magnetically levitate that object, regardless of size or weight.
Cosmic Artifacts[]
- Cosmic Cube: A powerful cosmic artifact that contains the power of a 4-dimensional space-time continuum and grants its wielder the ability to fulfill their wishes by warping the world around them. In the storyline of Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Comics Magazine, Doom acquired a Cosmic Cube by travelling into the past and took it for himself. He can use it to create constructs in the shapes of others and with their powers, banish others to alternate dimensions, nullify the powers of others, even those as powerful as Galactus, and even become one with the universe itself. At one point, Doom's scientists even created their own Cosmic Cube, which was able to layer other universes over the prime 616 reality.
- Cosmic Control Rod: Annihilus' symbol of power, a device that allows its wielder to control the cosmic energies of the Negative Zone and halt their aging process. During the aforementioned storyline, this is one of the artifacts that Doom acquires.
- Helix of Randac: An endless supply of bio-energy used by the Inhumans, which Doom stole in the aforementioned storyline and used to alter himself so he could survive while utilizing the Ultimate Machine.
- Ultimate Machine: The Ultimate Machine is an ancient device owned by Uatu that contains all the information in the universe and can be worn like a helmet to access this knowledge. However, for most beings, even those as smart as the Leader, these billions upon billions of sensations would prove lethal, making it impossible to use it. Doom, however, was able to draw upon its knowledge after modifying himself with the Inhumans' Helix of Randac.

Weaknesses[]
- Ego: It has been shown in the past that Doom can be manipulated by pandering to his sense of superiority, especially over Reed Richards. Spider-Man was able to gain his assistance concerning unknown technology by saying Reed could not figure it out. This ego is also the main reason for his vendetta against Reed, as he cannot accept that Reed understood his equations better than he did.
- Deal with Mephisto: Doom made a deal with the demon Mephisto; he was allowed to summon and challenge Mephisto once a year and try to win back the soul of his deceased mother, but each time he fails the people of Latveria will grow to despise him more and more. He later "rescued" his mother's soul and she left Mephistos afterlife to a better one.
- No matter how good his plans are, they tend to fail for one reason or another.
Squirrels
